In a world where environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns are taking center stage, understanding how ESG principles are applied in Malaysia is crucial. ESG isn't just a buzzword; it's a framework that businesses and industries across the globe are embracing. In Malaysia, the adoption of ESG is becoming a business necessity and a moral and ethical imperative. This blog post will explore what ESG are, and its specific relevance to wastewater treatment.

What is ESG?
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. These three elements represent a set of criteria by which businesses and organizations evaluate their operations and impact. The ''E'' focuses on environmental responsibility, such as sustainability and ecological impact. The ''S'' emphasizes social responsibility, encompassing matters like community engagement and labour practices. Lastly, the ''G'' focuses on governance, which deals with ethical leadership and transparency.

ESG in Malaysia
Malaysia is increasingly recognizing the importance of ESG in its corporate landscape. Several factors are driving this shift, including the desire to attract ethical investors, improve brand reputation, and contribute to global sustainability goals. More businesses in Malaysia are realizing that integrating ESG principles into their operations is not only beneficial for the environment and society but also business purpose around the world especially for exporting.

The Role of Wastewater Treatment
In Malaysia, wastewater treatment is a significant component of ESG considerations. The ''E'' in ESG pertains to environmental responsibility, and wastewater treatment directly aligns with this aspect. Proper wastewater treatment is vital for protecting the environment and conserving water resources. Businesses involved in wastewater treatment have a substantial role in maintaining environmental sustainability.

Social Responsibility in Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater treatment also encompasses the ''S'' in ESG – social responsibility. Responsible wastewater management can positively impact local communities by safeguarding their health, ensuring safe water sources, and promoting a better quality of life. By embracing ESG principles, companies in Malaysia can contribute to the well-being of the communities they serve.

Governance and Compliance
The ''G'' in ESG refers to governance, which is highly relevant to wastewater treatment operations. Adherence to regulatory standards and industry best practices is essential for maintaining good governance. Governance in wastewater treatment includes ethical leadership, transparent management, and risk assessment and management.

Benefits of ESG Integration in Wastewater Treatment
The advantages of adopting ESG principles in wastewater treatment are significant. It leads to improved operational efficiency, lower environmental impact, and a positive public image. Businesses that prioritize ESG in wastewater treatment are more likely to thrive in the long run.

Conclusion
ESG is not a greenwashing; it's a fundamental shift in the way businesses operate. In Malaysia, ESG is gaining traction, and its significance in wastewater treatment cannot be overstated. Embracing ESG principles is not only a responsible choice but also a strategic one, positioning businesses for long-term success while contributing to a more sustainable and socially responsible future.

Department of Environmental (DOE) Malaysia plays an important role in monitoring wastewater discharge activities from industrial areas. Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 is introduced as a guideline for industrial users to manage their wastewater generated from daily production. In this blog, we’ll address 5 frequently asked questions about wastewater treatment in Malaysia.

What is Industrial Effluent?
Industrial Effluent is any waste in the form of liquid generated from the manufacturing process. The process includes
  1. Wastewater generated from the treatment of water for process water supply.
  2. Wastewater generated from industrial activities

Why do we need an Industrial Effluent Treatment System (IETS)?
As responsible Malaysian citizens, it is our responsibility to protect our water resources from any source of pollution. Illegal discharge of toxic wastewater or dumping of hazardous waste into waterbody will cause severe consequences, like Kim Kim River Toxic Pollution case in 2019 at Pasir Gudang, Johor. The incident affected about 3,000 victims and required a cleaning operation of 1.5kilometer stretch of affected river. With the presence of IETS, you can treat your own wastewater to a safe discharge standard before release to inland water.

Where can I check for more details about Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 and courses for Competent Person?
You can find the details in the official DOE website, or click the link below
  1. Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009
  1. Course for Competent Person

When I need to kick-start to build IETS in my premises.
The answer is always START RIGHT NOW! If you’re currently having a new startup factory and it has potential to produce wastewater during your future production, the best approach is to start engaging an experience wastewater treatment consultant to assist in design and build a reliable system for your premises. It takes time for the site survey, documentation preparation, and submission for DOE to approve the construction of new IETS. If your factory is operating now without a proper treatment system for your wastewater, don’t worry about that, Spektra Watertech is here to help and guide you step by step until you successfully have a well-functioning Industrial Effluent Treatment System.

Who is the Competent Person?
An IETS without a good operation team is like having a good private jet without a good pilot, things will worsen if no proper control of the system. Hence, DOE works together Environment Institute of Malaysia (EiMAS) to provide a series of certified courses related to environmental management. The courses related to industrial effluent are
  1. Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Physical Chemical Processes) – CePIETSO-PCP
  2. Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Biological Processes) – CePIETSO-BP
Competent Person (CP) is a certified and well-trained personal who had attended the course, completed their field training report, and was interviewed by EiMAS before obtaining the certification.
